The size matters

Note that time is always in proportion to egg size. There are eggs in the following sizes:

S (small)
M (medium)
L (large) and
XL (very large)

So, first of all, it is crucial that you know the size of the eggs. A very large egg therefore needs more time to harden than a small egg.

In the pot or in the egg boiler? There is hardly any difference

In principle, you can cook your breakfast egg however you want. Most people use a classic pot for this. If you prefer an egg boiler, it is just as effective. The cooking time is practically identical for both methods!

The question is rather how long it takes for the water to really boil. If you have an induction hob, cold water quickly becomes hot and boils with a kind of booster function within 20 seconds - similar to a kettle.

Sometimes it takes up to 15 minutes for the water to boil on the stove and that can of course be expensive and time-consuming in the long run. An egg boiler is usually ready for immediate use, the water in the pot only when it is really boiling.

Make sure that you do not use a pan that is too large and that you use several liters of water. It is only important that your egg is completely covered with water so that it does not remain too soft in one place.

Never boil the eggs with too much water, as this is unnecessary and only ensures that it takes a few minutes longer for the eggs to boil.

The waxy egg - the favorite

Most people would describe this egg as perfect: the egg white is hard and the yolk is still slightly runny in the middle. This condition is also known as wax-soft.

We tell you how long your eggs have to cook to reach this preferred cooking state. Note that the cooking time in minutes depends on the egg size.

A soft egg - no comparison to the raw state

Very few people eat an actually raw and undercooked egg. The eggs should lie in hot water for at least a short time before they are eaten. Those who like to be soft eggs, i.e. with an already hardened soft egg white but a completely liquid egg yolk, should adhere to the following time:

S: 3 minutes
M: 3½ minutes
L: 4 minutes
XL: 4½ minutes

A hard egg - how long does it take to cook?

Those who prefer a hard egg - i.e. who want to enjoy both hard egg white and egg yolk - can calculate the time generously. Once the eggs have been hard-boiled, nothing changes in their condition.

You practically can't cook an egg "too hard". You can of course still use a calculator, but you should be on the safe side if you do not want a soft egg under any circumstances and calculate the duration a little upwards.

M: 8 minutes
L: 8½ minutes
XL: 9 minutes

In principle, however, you can safely regulate the duration and set 10 minutes for each egg size. The suggested cooking time can safely be exceeded. In this way, the eggs are no longer too soft and can be used in many ways.

If you boil your egg hard, you can use it for coloring and keep it in the refrigerator for some time. It is better to calculate the cooking time generously so as not to experience any nasty surprises.

If not cooked properly, your eggs will look stupid out of the laundry.

Tips for cooking eggs

Of course, you can also cook your eggs in the same pot, which should have a different degree of hardness. To do this, simply add the eggs to the boiling water later, as they should not be too hard.

Different family members can mark the eggs with a water-proof pen, for example - so everyone recognizes their egg in the pot and determines the duration themselves calculate ideal cooking time.

This stimulates thinking and can be introduced as a ritual on the weekend. Even children learn how to handle food in a playful way.

Be careful not to put the eggs in cold water, as this increases the duration many times over. Cold water should only be used after boiling in order to end the cooking process abruptly.

A waxy egg that is to be perfect must be quenched with cold water immediately after cooking. It is already enough to briefly pour it over it. It doesn't cook any further and may become too hard.
