Are you pregnant and suffering from nausea or vomiting? Do you feel sick when you smell certain dishes and can no longer eat some? Is your body not doing well, especially in the morning, and you suffer from morning sickness?
Sickness in pregnancy can appear in the first few weeks and last for a few weeks. However, you can alleviate these symptoms with certain tips! What exactly is nausea during pregnancy, who is particularly affected, when it starts and which tips can help you here can be found in our article.
Nausea during pregnancy: when?
Nausea during pregnancy is one of the most important and clearest signs of pregnancy. Often there is also vomiting (vomiting), another noticeable change.
When do nausea and vomiting begin?
The point at which pregnant women are affected by nausea differs from woman to woman. However, it occurs more frequently from the 5th to the 12th week of pregnancy (SSW).

The graph shows how many people suffer from pregnancy sickness or even both - nausea and vomiting - depending on the week of pregnancy. For example, the researchers found that 31.9% of pregnant women experience nausea in the 5th to 8th week of pregnancy, and 27.2% have both. The graphic clearly shows that you have to reckon with these signs of pregnancy, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy (up to the 12th week). The percentages are based on a study in which the researchers analyzed 52,687 pregnancies.10
Most often it happens that the symptoms increase sharply from the 6th week. At the beginning of pregnancy, shortly after fertilization and implantation, signs such as vomiting are less noticeable. After the 12th week of pregnancy, the symptoms slowly subside.
Morning sickness and vomiting
Morning sickness is often discussed, as many pregnant women increasingly feel unwell in the morning or do not feel healthy. However, morning sickness does not affect every woman, as it often comes around noon and can last the whole day.
The fact that many expectant mothers struggle with nausea, especially in the morning, may be due to the fact that the stomach is empty at night and, as a result, the blood sugar level is particularly low. In combination with the fluctuating hormones in the first few months of pregnancy, this can lead to the dreaded symptoms such as morning sickness.

Who suffers from pregnancy sickness?
Some pregnant women just feel uncomfortable in the stomach after getting up, while others feel sick all day long and even vomit. Pregnancy sickness is the subject of numerous studies. But it is rarely examined who suffers more from it and what risk factors there are that favor nausea during pregnancy.
The results of a study by Dr. Carol Louik show that women over the age of 25 have a lower risk of pregnancy sickness. By contrast, women who have already had a child were more likely to suffer from vomiting and nausea during pregnancy. For women who have already had a miscarriage and for women with twins, the risk is also higher.8
Why do you suffer from nausea during pregnancy?
The reasons for nausea during pregnancy have not yet been fully clarified. It is very likely that a combination of different influences can be seen as the cause.
Causes of Nausea in Pregnancy
One of the causes is particularly hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a pregnancy hormone.1, 7 Both hCG and estrogen are increased during pregnancy. The hormone is also said to affect the digestive tract as well as the sense of smell and taste.1 Pregnant women instinctively avoid certain substances that could be harmful to the embryo. These include coffee, roast products and certain spices.
Other possible causes of nausea during pregnancy are:1
- low blood sugar levels
- Disorders in the functioning of the thyroid gland
- Bacterial infection of the stomach
- Heredity (if your mother was bad a lot, you are more likely to suffer from nausea during pregnancy)
- Fatigue and exhaustion
Possibly can too
- certain deficiency symptoms due to poor diet such as vitamin B deficiency as well
- mental stress such as stress and anxiety
induce or worsen vomiting or nausea.
Pregnancy sickness & risk of miscarriages
But pregnancy sickness has one advantage: According to a study, the risk of miscarriage is very low in women who struggle with nausea during pregnancy. The increase in hCG significantly reduces the likelihood of a miscarriage.2
Until when does nausea last during pregnancy?
The level of the pregnancy hormone falls again after the first trimester of pregnancy (approx. 12-16 weeks).7 This reduces or even disappears nausea during pregnancy. If the nausea does not settle in early pregnancy, i.e. after the first three months or the 12th week of pregnancy, and you still feel nausea, it is advisable to consult a doctor or gynecologist in any case.
This is especially true in the case of excessive vomiting, for which psychological factors are also used as an explanation. In principle, however, the nausea during pregnancy can drag on until the birth.
The pregnancy sickness is normal and healthy and does not affect the baby. Exceptions are cases of particularly severe and pronounced nausea and vomiting. In very rare cases, the so-called hyperemesis gravidarum, a very pronounced form of vomiting, can occur. According to a study led by Dr. Mario Festin 1 in 200 women is affected by hyperemesis gravidarum.7 If you suffer from it, then treatment in the hospital is usually urgently required. Untreated Hyperemesis Gravidarum can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Adequate hydration is therefore very important.

What Helps With Nausea During Pregnancy?
You now know that it is perfectly normal for almost every pregnant woman to suffer from nausea during pregnancy. Unfortunately, this is often included when the desire to have children is fulfilled! You probably automatically forego certain dishes if your stomach turns at the smell.
Especially during pregnancy it is important to use natural methods and “home remedies”. If you need to or want to take medication, you should therefore consult your doctor or gynecologist. More rarely, vomiting (vomiting) is so severe that hospital treatment is necessary.
Ginger & Co. for sickness during pregnancy
Some natural remedies, herbs, and vitamins are said to reduce nausea during pregnancy.
Tip 1: ginger
Ginger is a natural medicine. Women use ginger tea or a ginger ointment to combat symptoms such as nausea during pregnancy. A scientific study has shown that ginger z. B. as ginger tea during pregnancy can bring the body back into balance and have an antispasmodic effect.3
Tip 2: herbal tea
Pregnant women who are vomiting are advised to drink one to two cups of herbal tea a day. Unlike coffee or black tea, herbal teas do not contain caffeine. Expectant mothers like to drink a tea with chamomile or a nice herbal mixture against nausea. Chamomile & Co. will be especially good for your stomach and intestines and give you relief. Adequate hydration is also important.
Tip 3: vitamin B.
Naturopaths recommend vitamin B because it ensures well-being during pregnancy and is particularly helpful for morning sickness. Vitamin B12 is particularly recommended. It is found in fish, meat, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products. It is also found in whole grain cereals as well as soy and wheat germ.
In a literature search, Dr. Mario Festin also has evidence that the vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is said to help against nausea in pregnancy. Vitamin B6 is found in low doses in almost all foods. Good animal sources are dairy products, meat (especially liver, poultry) and fish. Good vegetable sources include cabbage, green beans, lentils, lamb's lettuce, potatoes, whole grains, wheat germ, nuts, yeast, avocado, and bananas.7
Diet tips for nausea and vomiting
Diet should have an impact if you feel sick during pregnancy.
Tip 4: drink a lot
It is important that you don't forget to drink. Doctors recommend that you consume plenty of fluids, preferably water or tea, especially if you suffer from nausea during pregnancy. If you don't like drinking pure water, you can also try ginger tea. It gives you a lot of liquid with a little taste, but without calories.
Tip 5: eat small meals
If you vomit during pregnancy, pay special attention to your diet. It is better to limit your meals to several, smaller meals. Divide your food into small portions. If you feel sick during pregnancy, rusks or (low-sugar) biscuits can do you good.
Try to have some tea, rusks or dry bread in bed before you get up. The small meal increases your blood sugar level, which can otherwise increase your nausea during pregnancy.
Nibble dried fruits or nuts in between meals. Many women swear by putting nuts or dried fruits in their mouths immediately when they feel nauseated. Then chew them very well and for a long time and then swallow them. For example, you can use dried apricots, hazelnuts and almonds for this.
Tip 6: make a meal log
Make notes about the food and its effects on your well-being - when and with which food do you vomit or feel unwell? Certain foods may be discovered that you cannot tolerate. This way you get to the bottom of your nausea during pregnancy and can reduce or avoid it by omitting certain foods.
Nausea During Pregnancy: What Else Can Help!
There are many other tips and resources that can help you during the months of your pregnancy. Just try them out!
Tip 7: scent of lemon or grapefruit
Different smells can contribute to nausea in early pregnancy. However: The aroma of lemon and grapefruit ensures relaxation and can contribute to a positive change in symptoms such as pregnancy sickness.6
Tip 8: acupressure
A natural treatment method for pregnant women against pregnancy sickness is acupressure and acupuncture by doctors, naturopaths and midwives. Scientific studies indicate that acupuncture & Co. can relieve symptoms, especially in the morning. For example, a certain pressure on the wrist is supposed to bring about some relief. Certain methods can help expectant mothers with morning sickness.4,5
Tip 9: exercise
Exercising in the fresh air while taking a walk will do you good if you feel sick during pregnancy. This boosts your metabolism. In addition, some pregnant women recommend taking a yoga, Pilates or gymnastics class in order to get the circulation going and stay healthy. Anyone who relies on the effects of yoga, Shiatsu & Co. should look for a provider who has knowledge of pregnancy. In general, exercise is also a good recipe for making stress disappear, for example.
Tip 10: get enough sleep
When you vomit, you often suffer from fatigue. It will do you good if you rest and relax. Getting enough sleep is also very important.
Well rested, you can start your day more leisurely. Just set your alarm 15 minutes earlier. Then you have enough time and you don't get into a hectic rush in the morning, which may be causing your nausea during pregnancy and especially the morning sickness.
Also pay attention to your toothpaste and the size of the toothbrush in the morning. These can also make pregnancy worse. A change of toothpaste brand and toothbrush often helps here.6
Tip 11: medication for sickness during pregnancy
If it is particularly bad and no other “home remedies” help, medication against nausea during pregnancy is also available. Hyperemisis gravidarum (severe nausea during pregnancy) needs to be treated. However, the initial treatment usually consists of extensive nutritional advice.
Medicines can also be given if you feel sick during pregnancy. Examples here are the preparations or active ingredients pyridoxine (vitamin B6), doxylamine, antihistamines / antihistamines and anticholinergics as well as other low-dose antiemetics and gastrointestinal drugs.9
But be careful: The researchers of an American study warn that the effects of promethazine, methylprednisolone, diphenhydramine, dimenhydrinate, doxylamine (also in combination with pyridoxine) and hydroxyzine can lead to a problematic course and outcome of the pregnancy. The warning was based on a study with 43 pregnant women with hyperemesis gravidarum who received treatment with these active substances. Taking these preparations resulted in side effects on the unborn baby.11
If you are thinking about taking medication and certain remedies, please contact your doctor. Side effects and side effects for you and the child should be excluded by taking them.
