I am not responsible for any damage or loss of data to your computer. Everyone is responsible for this procedure. (Status: 08/15/2016)

Hello chatters,

since I am mainly in the chat room Geek I have noticed that there are always questions about computer protection, or if someone has strange problems with their computer, these are more often due to viruses and malware.

I would like to give you step-by-step instructions on how to check your computer for malware. This tutorial is also useful if you have already installed anti-virus software. An antivirus alone will No way can offer 100% protection.

Popular antivirus software (especially free versions) offer protection, but these are usually set to a standard level that viruses often take advantage of. It helps if you set the intensity or the efficiency to high.

Many viruses are specially written for certain antivirus tools, so that in standard mode, the AV tool does not classify them as dangerous and ignores them. Every now and then it helps to test your computer with another antivirus program.

However, it is important to ensure that two antivirus programs are not running at the same time, as this can cause problems. What is also very important that the latest updates are installed. For the operating system, web browser, mail programs and anti-virus software. Any missing security update can pose a potential threat to your computer. It is also important to ensure that the installed programs are kept up-to-date.

The differences between malware, viruses, Trojans, rootkits and other variants are described on the following page: http://blog.emsisoft.com/de/2012/03/08/tec120308de/

In this tutorial I will show you how you can check your computer for malware.

For this I like to use the following tools:

Malwarebytes (Free)
Link: https://de.malwarebytes.com/
Description: This free antimalware tool is used to more intensively detect malware on the PC where many other antivirus tools fail.

AdwCleaner
Link: https://toolslib.net/downloads/finish/1/
Description: The AdwCleaner is also a very helpful, effective and free tool. This recognizes and removes massively frozen adware (Wikipedia description of adware: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adware) on the computer.

Avast Free
Link: http://www.avast.com/de-de/index
Description: This free antivirus program is my favorite and is also listed by the Federal Police as the best free antivirus program in the test:

Remove malware with Malwarebytes

Where other antivirus scanners fail, Malwarebytes will mostly prevail.
I have had the experience very often that Malwarebytes recognize many viruses even though an antivirus program such as Norton, Antivir or Kaspersky is running with active protection.

Just why is that so?
As already mentioned in this tutorial, many malicious programs have been created on the free antivirus tool with default settings and bypass this protection.

As a secret weapon, I recommend Malwarebytes, as this tool carries out an analysis in the system more intensively, detects and eliminates malware.

Installation of Malwarebytes:

  1. Download the free tool (see link above) and save it on your desktop.
  2. Start the installation file (you may have to agree to the system again that it may be executed)
  3. Follow the steps to the last point
  4. Before you click “Finish”, you can deselect the option to test the free Pro version.

Adjust the settings of Malwarebytes:

  1. When the program starts, you should update the database version by clicking "Update Now" on the dashboard.
  2. If the program should be displayed in a different language such as English, click on "Settings" above and under "Language" you can select the language "German".
  3. Now click under “Settings” on “Detection and Protection” and then select all detection options. Accordingly, the following points should be selected:
    - Advanced heuristic engine (use Shuriken)
    - Check for rootkits
    - Search in archives

Start scanning:

  1. Click on "Scan" above, start with a click on the blue button "Start search" and let the scan run through to the end.
  2. After the threat scan, if infections are detected, a log is displayed in which the findings are displayed in a list.

Procedure for detected infections:

  1. If they are PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), you should also select them. However, you should first make a note of the names, locations and types of the PUPs, which programs they are and then do some research on search engines. If you need help with this, you can also write me a spinmail. Other infections should normally also be eliminated. So consequently select these entries (if they are not yet) with a tick.
  2. After your selection, please click on the blue button "Remove selection".
  3. If you now click on the "History" tab in the top right corner, you will see in the list which threats have been quarantined. These finds are now in quarantine.
  4. Now click on the "Delete all" button at the bottom right to delete the malware and confirm this in the following dialog box with "Yes".
  5. If necessary, you can restore them, but I would not recommend that.
  6. After you are done, restart the system and start a search again.

If you still need help, just write me a spinmail.

Remove adware with AdwCleaner

As with the other tools, the AdwCleaner is very effective. Among other things, this also removes unwanted advertising in self-opening browser windows or browser tabs. If you want to close these, more new ones are often opened.

When looking for malware, you should NEVER rely on one tool, but rather use a second one in order to analyze software more independently, as I already explained in the first part of this tutorial.

How do you use AdwCleaner?

  1. Download the free tool (see link above) and save it on your desktop.
  2. Start the program by clicking on adwcleaner_6.000.exe (version number may differ). If necessary, you have to agree to the system again that it can be executed.
  3. A new window of AdwCleaner opens, in which you have to agree to the terms of use. Click on the "I agree" button.
  4. Now click on "Search". The tool will start scanning for adware. Let it cycle completely.
  5. If above the search bar in red color "X threats found" then click through the tabs at the bottom under "Services", "Folders", "Files", etc. and select the finds, if they are not already selected. Pay attention to the left-right arrows on the right side at the level of the tab descriptions. Most of the time, some are still hidden, with which you can then navigate there.
  6. After the finds have been selected, you have to click on the "Delete" button.
  7. A dialog box is then displayed, indicating that all programs will be closed. Please save any open files first and then click on "OK".
  8. At some point a message will appear asking you to restart the computer.
  9. After the restart, a log of AdwCleaner appears, where you can read out the individual actions.
  10. When all finds have been removed, please scan with Malwarebytes and then search the system again with the AdwCleaner to be sure.

Avast Free antivirus program

A good antivirus is a must. As described, I always tend to use the free antivirus program Avast-Free. Personally, I have the Avast Premier version on some systems and I use Bitdefender on other systems, but the free version of Avast is my favorite among the free antivirus programs from all providers because I have had the best experience with it for many years and have also tested others would have.

However, for this, as well as for others, the efficiency should be increased, as I described in the upper part of this tutorial. Default settings should never be used.

A current test from May 1, 2016 by the Federal Police shows that Avast Free is listed as the best free antivirus tool in the top 10. http://www.bundespolizei-virus.de/virenscanner/

If you decide to use Avast Free, then first uninstall all other antivirus tools that are active or have real-time protection in order to avoid conflicts.

How does malware get onto a system?

Phishing:
It can be due to many things. Maybe you got a phishing email and clicked on a link in the email, which opened a phishing website (Wikipedia description on phishing: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing) and you got infected by it.

If you have received an e-mail where you are not entirely sure, it makes sense to ALWAYS enter the web address for an account MANUALLY in the browser. Clicking on a link in the email, which means that you can log into the web account, is always very dangerous. It can also be that you clicked on a link on the Internet that also performed this process.

Untrustworthy links:
The short URLs are useful, but insecure because it is not clear exactly what the destination of this link is. It can also be that the link description has a completely different goal.

For this, I recommend copying the link address first using the right mouse button and dissolving it in the editor. Alternatively, you can copy the link and have it checked at https://www.virustotal.com/de/. Another security feature is that you open the link via the browser sandbox under Avast. Not clicking or opening it at all is of course the best option! :-)

Outdated software:
It is important to regularly check and update your anti-virus software and browser settings so that you have at least 97% protection. All programs should be up to date. This does not only mean the operating system, but all installations. Any outdated software can represent a security hole and is a potential threat to the system.

Free programs:
The common mistake is installing free tools from unknown websites. If free programs, then only from trusted websites. For example, Chip.de writes a warning in the case of tools that can be downloaded to indicate that this freeware will consequently also install adware or other optional programs.

If so, you should choose other programs and / or deselect the optional components during installation, as otherwise these free programs infiltrate the system with malware.

In principle, every downloaded file should be scanned for malware before execution or installation. With Avast you can have it checked by right-clicking on the file in the context menu. There is the item "Virus search filename.exe".

Other important information

I recommend running the tools in the following order:

  1. Malwarebytes (Free)
  2. AdwCleaner
  3. Avast Free

If viruses are found, I recommend running these tools several times.

Notes on Avast Free

  1. If you decide to use Avast Free, then first uninstall all other antivirus tools that are active or have real-time protection in order to avoid conflicts.
  2. I recommend in the "Settings" -> Register "General" -> select the "Activate hardened mode" with the option "Aggressive".
  3. The check mark should be set for the following point "Check for potentially unwanted programs (PUP)".
  4. In "Settings" -> "Components" tab, you should set the level to "High" and below in the "Efficiency" tab of the individual sections, such as "File system protection" after clicking on "Customize" -> standing next to “Check the system for malware-typical behavior” set the “efficiency” to the maximum level by selecting all 3 bars.
  5. In the same window under the "Actions" tab, you should adapt these effectively and alternatively in the "Virus", "Potentially unwanted programs (PUP)" and "Suspicious" tabs opposite.

IMPORTANT:
It also doesn't help that the antivirus tools are set too strictly in terms of the number of file scans, because otherwise the real-time protection system will be too slow and will only be busy with scanning. However, you should find a good measure. However, the efficiency and hardened mode can take place at the highest level.
