It's moving forward for good reason Health services research more and more in the focus of medicine. Because the health system in Germany, as in other industrialized nations, has to cope with major challenges now and in the future: With demographic change, the proportion of people who (have to) use expensive medical care is increasing. At the same time, the possibilities of medicine continue to grow. But caring for people with the most serious illnesses and enabling them to lead a largely normal life also ties up considerable social resources.

It is a question of responsibility to use available resources and funds as optimally as possible for each individual patient, but also with a view to benefits and costs for society as a whole. We need patient-oriented,scientifically based supply conceptsthat are developed on a solid database and implemented in everyday medical practice. A Cross-professional and cross-sectoral approach is indispensable for this. The term has established itself internationally for this Value-based healthcare: This refers to care concepts that focus on the patient and are primarily based on treatment results. The variability of patient characteristics and their preferences must be taken into account to a particular degree (Precision Medicine). Both concepts will become the focal point for future successful developments in the German healthcare system.

In addition to the established study designs, new methodological approaches are necessary that take into account the variability and individuality of the patients as well as the use of extensive data from routine care. It is important to develop and establish reliable and practicable methods for researching, evaluating and ensuring medical quality.
